Saving Money on Veterinary Care

Of course we want the very best for our pets, but we also want to save a few bucks too. Here are a few techniques that allow us to do both.

  1. Schedule regular checkups. "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" is correct and applies to pets too. It is much cheaper to prevent an illness than the cost of dealing with a problem later when it is discovered. A checkup may also prevent a loss of a pet

  2. Take a close look at your vaccine protocol. Some vaccines are optional while others are essential in preventing serious disease. Talk to your vet about which vaccines are needed where you live. You may also buy vaccines online and treat your dog yourself.

  3. Spay or neuter your dog. This will reduce the chance of serious health problems such as uterine, ovarian, and testicular cancer. Look into your local shelter programs for a low-cost alternative to your vet.

  4. Brush your dog's teeth to prevent tartar, gingivitis, loose or infected teeth. These can lead to heart and kidney problems and expensive procedures. For a healther dog, Start a daily dental routine.

  5. Treat your dog with a topical flea and tick solution during the warm months. Flea and ticks can cause serious problems from skin irritations to life-threatening anemia. Check online for additional savings.

  6. Quit smoking for your health and your dog. Dogs can suffer from asthma, bronchitis, lymphoma and oral, nasal and lung cancers brought on from second hand smoke. At least avoid smoking around your dog.

  7. For certain problems, a specialist is the way to go. Specialist can effect a cure as quickly as possible and that saves money.

  8. Consider buying pet insurance if a serious illness would put a severe strain on your budget. Buy while your dog is healthy. Read the fine print - some are much better than others.

  9. Use good quality dog food. Food formulated under the guidelines of the American Association of Feed Control Officials is often more cost effective than a homemade diet. Do not overfeed. Obesity can create additional problems.

  10. Look for bargains. Pet food, medicine and grooming supply coupons save money. Shop for vet services by comparing costs for preventive care.

I think animal testing is a terrible idea; they get all nervous and give the wrong answers.
